Cosmetic procedures like laser toning, Juvelook, Rejuran, fillers, and botox have become increasingly popular. But did you know that aftercare is just as important as the treatment itself?
No matter how advanced the procedure, one wrong move afterwards can reduce the effectiveness — or even cause unwanted skin reactions. Here are 5 key things you should never do after a skin treatment, according to our board-certified dermatologists.
1. Sauna, Hot Baths, or Steam Rooms
Why to Avoid: Your skin is more sensitive to heat after a procedure. High temperatures can worsen inflammation and increase the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation (PIH).
Tip: Avoid any hot environments for at least 3–5 days post-treatment.
2. Scrubbing, Peeling, or Rubbing the Face
Why to Avoid: Your skin barrier is weakened, so physical irritation — like harsh towel drying or scrubbing — can delay healing and cause sensitivity or damage.
Tip: Use lukewarm water, and gently pat your face dry with a soft towel. No scrubs or exfoliants.
3. Alcohol or Smoking
Why to Avoid: Alcohol dilates blood vessels and impairs skin recovery. Smoking hinders collagen production and increases pigmentation risks.
Tip: Avoid both for at least 2–3 days to protect your results.
4. Skipping Sunscreen
Why to Avoid: Your skin becomes more reactive to UV rays after procedures, increasing the chance of PIH or uneven pigmentation.
Tip: Apply SPF 30+ indoors, and reapply every 2 hours when outside.
5. Using Unfamiliar Skincare Products
Why to Avoid: Even trending “miracle” serums can cause breakouts or irritation if introduced too soon after a treatment.
Tip: Stick to a gentle, dermatologist-recommended routine focused on calming and moisturizing.
